Six Steps to Achieve Your Goals

Almost every year, we all set some goals to achieve. For instance as a student, you want to improve in your studies, workers to improve in your job and organizations to offer better services to your clients.

But, at the end of the day, few people achieve their goals. Others begin, but along the way they quit. While other people did nothing. These problems usually occur especially when people lack clarity of purpose and others due to poor planning. Perhaps, many other people lack the courage to pursue their goals.

In this article, I would be discussing some steps which I believe can help you to actualize your goals. I called this steps goal cycle because, it is a continuous process from vision to assessment and performance.

1. Have A Vision

The first step for you to achieve your goals begins with the clarity of vision. Ask yourself, what is my goal for this year? Or what do I want to achieve this year? If you are able to answer above questions then, buy a diary and write down your goals. “People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.”– Earl Nightingale

2. Have A Plan

The next step is to make a plan. H. Stanley quotes “A good plan is like a road map, it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there”. So, planning usually asks question like, how do I get there? What are the necessary steps to take to achieve my goals? In other words, planning prepares you to be a winner. Zig Ziglar quotes “You were born to win, but to be a winner; you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win”.

3. Set Specific Time

Here, you have to set specific time to achieve your goals. Setting time helps you to differentiate your short term and long term goals. For instance, some of your goals can be achieved weekly, some monthly and some yearly depending on your ability. To avoid doing everything at a time, you have to breakdown your goals into phases so that it can be achievable. Always remember “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back” – Harvey Mackay

4. Take Action

After you finish defining your vision, planning and setting some specific time to achieve your goals, you have to take a daily steps to actualize your goals. Most of the time, this is where many people get stock either because they lack the courage to step out or they keep procrastinating. As a result of this, their goals turn into a day dream. Hence, for you to achieve your goals, take daily steps and do your best.

5. Stay Persistent

Never quit, keep moving until you accomplish your goals. I believe, great men and woman of our time have this attribute which is persistent. They are not concern about what they are going THROUGH rather, where they are going TO. Although, everything might not go smoothly as you planned but don’t give up. Edward Eggleston quotes “Persistent people begin their success where others end in failure”.

6. Assess Your Performance

Here, you have to check your performance and evaluate yourself base on the following:

  • Area to improve:
  • You have to evaluate yourself and check the areas you needed to improve.

  • Area to change:
  • You might need to change your approach on how you do your work. Think of new strategy that can help you increase your performance.

  • Area to stop:
  • Here, you have to be honest to yourself. For example, as a worker maybe the reason you are not performing well is because of job mis-match. So, you can inform your department to put you where you can do better.

Finally, for you to achieve your goals successfully, you have to revisit each goal cycle to ensure that you on the right track. For instance, you might need to make some changes in your vision or re-modify your plans, increase or reduce time set, take more steps, stay persistent regardless of the challenges and always check your performance and evaluate yourself.
